Clinical Interests:


Dr McMahon has a very large clinical practice in general nephrology and chronic kidney disease. He also cares for patients on both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, and attends on both the inpatient and nephrology consult services.


Dr McMahon performs central venous catheter insertions and removals as well as peritoneal dialysis catheter exteriorizations.


Administrative Duties:


Dr McMahon has been the Medical Director of the AKC-N Chronic Kidney Disease Clinics since its inception in 2000 as a single unit at the University of Alberta Hospital and has overseen its expansion to include satellite units at the Grey Nuns Hospital, Royal Alexandria Hospital, Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and the Red Deer Regional Hospital.



Research

Dr McMahon is the principle investigator in numerous multi-center clinical trials currently being conducted at the U of A in both the dialysis and chronic kidney disease patients. His research has been published in many prestigious publications including the New England Journal of Medicine.


Dr McMahon is also the co-author of the renal physiology chapter in Campbell-Walsh Urology textbook, which is considered the standard textbook in urology.


Teaching

Dr McMahon is heavily involved in medical education at the undergraduate, post-graduate, and continuing professional learning levels. 


He is currently the course coordinator for MED 519 (Renal), which is a 4 week course presented in the first year medical school curriculum. He is heavily involved in lecturing to the medical students as well curriculum and exam development. He also coordinates all undergraduate electives in nephrology. Over the years he has been recognized for his teaching excellence with numerous awards from the medical students.


Dr McMahon is also the assistant Program Director for the Nephrology Residency program at the U of A. He works extensively with the general internal medicine residents as they rotate through nephrology and coordinates all resident electives. He is a highly sought after lecturer at their academic half days and has won numerous teaching awards at the post graduate level as well.
