Personal Statement:

I am interested in infectious disease epidemiology and transmission, communicable disease control and public health surveillance systems with emphasis on vaccine preventable diseases, immunization and tuberculosis. I aspire to better understand, manage and prevent child health concerns associated with environmental exposures. I value important links between academia and public health practice and work closely with medical officers of health and other public health professionals.

After receiving his medical degree (cum laude) from the Dnepropetrovsk State Medical Academy in Ukraine, Alexander Doroshenko was awarded an Edmund Muskie Graduate Fellowship to complete a master’s degree in public health at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He then trained in pediatrics, neonatology and public health in the UK before moving to Canada to pursue a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He joined New Brunswick’s Department of Health as Provincial Medical Officer of Health before his recruitment in 2013 to the Division of Preventive Medicine at the University of Alberta, where he also holds an adjunct professorship with the School of Public Health.

Leadership and Collaborations:

At Children’s Environmental Health Clinic (ChEHC), a WHO Collaborating Centre in Children’s Environmental Health and the only Canadian program of its kind, Dr. Doroshenko is part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to child health concerns associated with environmental exposure. He is involved in several provincial committees including as co-chair of Alberta Health Services Risk Assessment (blood-borne viruses) panel, and as a member of the Council of Public Health Physicians of Alberta and the Population, Public and Indigenous Health Strategic Clinical Network. Within the Department of Medicine, he is assistant program director and member of the Residency Program Committee for the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program; member of the Residency Program Committee of the Occupational Medicine Residency Program; and divisional representative of the Strategic Clinical Improvement Committee.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Doroshenko is a medical officer of health for Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone, physician at the Provincial Tuberculosis Clinic and a clinician at the Children’s Environmental Health Clinic (ChEHC) at Misericordia Hospital.

Research

As a specialist in infectious disease epidemiology, Dr. Doroshenko’s clinical research investigates the range of public health concerns from studying risk factors for infectious diseases, origins and trajectories of outbreaks, and evaluation of interventions and response measures to control communicable diseases. In his research, he uses various methodologies, including innovative agent-based mathematical modelling of vaccine-preventable diseases which can be utilized as a public health decision-making tool.

He has received funding as principal investigator and co-investigator on research projects from the Canadian Institute for Health Research, Canadian Immunization Network, Workers Compensation Board of Alberta, Alberta Health, the University Hospital Foundation, Women and Children’s Health Research Institute and start-up funding from within the faculty and department. He has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in the area of public health and reviewed and written editorials for leading journals in the field.

Teaching

Dr. Doroshenko is the preceptor and supervisor for the International Medical Graduate/PHPM residency program in the Division of Preventive Medicine. He has supervised the research projects for several graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical trainees and provides classroom, clinical and continuing medical education instruction in public health and communicable diseases.
