Overview

About

Dr. Alicia Long is currently appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, and works as an obstetrician/gynecologist and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. She completed medical school and residency at the University of Alberta, and then went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Vancouver, British Columbia, in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, Endometriosis, and Chronic Pelvic Pain. During this time, she concurrently completed a Master of Science degree in Reproductive and Developmental Sciences (RDS).

Research

Dr. Long was successful in securing a CIHR – Canada Graduate Scholarship grant, and in 2023, went on to publish a large retrospective cohort study examining patients with endometriosis who underwent hysterectomy with or without ovarian preservation, and outcomes related to re-operation as well as ongoing pain. This study found that patients who underwent hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy had a lower re-operation rate than those who underwent a hysterectomy with conservation of one or both ovaries. However, there was little difference between the groups for the secondary outcomes measured, including physician visits for endometriosis and pelvic pain, opioid use, and use of hormonal suppression medications, suggesting that persistent pelvic pain after hysterectomy for endometriosis may not differ substantively based on ovarian conservation status. Therefore, given the risks of surgical menopause, strong consideration should be given to ovarian conservation at the time of hysterectomy for endometriosis.

Teaching

Dr. Long founded the Rapid Access Gynecology Clinic (RAGC), a longitudinal resident led teaching clinic to providing access to urgent gynecologic care for patients. Through teaching in clinics, classrooms, and the operating room, Dr. Long is dedicated to educating the next generation of physicians and gynecologists across both undergraduate and postgraduate medical training.
