About

Andriy Talpash is an active composer, conductor, and educator. He has composed works for several ensembles and soloists, including Calgary's Ensemble Resonance and The Rubbing Stone Ensemble, Continuum Contemporary Music, Ensemble contemporain de Montréal, Ensemble KORE, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Trio Fibonacci, Kathleen Supové, William Street, Roger Admiral, Viktoria Reiswich-Dapp, Vincent David, Nicolas Prost, Ramona Ramlochand, Mathieu Gaulin. His works have been performed throughout Canada, the United States, and Brazil, and have been broadcast on Canadian, Australian, Spanish and Turkish national radios.


He has received grants from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Canada Council for the Arts, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Some awards include: First Prize in the 2000 SOCAN Young Composers Competition, Sir Ernest Macmillan prize for his orchestral composition Queezinart--hocket in a blender; second place in the chamber music category of the 15th CBC/Radio-Canada National Competition for Young Composers (2002-03) for his piece HWY 2. Andriy represented Canada at UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers in Vienna, Austria (June 2003).


Andriy attained the degrees of Bachelor of Music (composition and saxophone performance) from the University of Alberta (1997), Master of Music (composition) from McGill University (1999), and Doctor of Music (composition) from McGill University (2005). He studied composition with Brian Cherney, Howard Bashaw, Malcolm Forsyth, and attended composition master classes with Louis Andriessen and Etienne Rolin.


In his work promoting new music in Edmonton, Andriy served as the Vice President on the board of the Society for New Music in Edmonton (2012-2016).  He was also the director of NME's resident ensemble, Violet Collective.


Since 2005, Dr. Talpash has been teaching music composition, theory, and orchestration at the University of Alberta, and is also the music department’s New Music Coordinator. 

Courses

MUSIC 156 - Music Theory II

Chromatic harmony and voice leading; analysis. Prerequisite: MUSIC 155. Registration priority given to BMus (all routes), BMus/BEd, BEd Music Major/Minor, BA (Honors) Music Major, and BA Music Major/Minor students.


MUSIC 450 - Analysis Through Performance

Analysis of a range of 20th century and contemporary repertoires through performance and coaching. Prerequisite: MUSIC 455, or consent of department.


MUSIC 451 - Aural and Keyboard Skills III

The development of advanced musicianship skills. Prerequisites: MUSIC 250 or 256, and 251, or equivalent.


MUSIC 463 - Orchestration

A detailed study of orchestration and its historical developments. Prerequisite: MUSIC 263.


MUSIC 471 - Composition and Sonic Arts 3

Tutorial instruction in either acoustic or electronic free composition. Public performance of compositions is required. Prerequisite: MUSIC 470 and consent of the Department based on portfolio review. Pre or corequisite: MUSIC 445. Registration priority given to BMus, BA (Honors) Music Major, BEd.


MUSIC 481 - Topics in Contemporary Music and Sonic Arts

Co- or prerequisite: MUSIC 455 or consent of Department


MUSIC 581 - Advanced Studies in Avant-Garde

Prerequisite: MUSIC 256.


MUSIC 660B - Advanced Composition I

Prerequisite: MUSIC 660.


MUSIC 760B - Advanced Composition III

Restricted to DMus Composition students.
