About
Dr. Carlos Cervera is currently appointed as Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed his first professional degree at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1994 and specialty training in Internal Medicine in 2001. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Barcelona with original research on innate immunity receptors and the risk of post-transplant infections.
Dr. Cervera’s research interests include the study of infections in the immunocompromised hosts including solid organ transplantation, opportunistic infections and viral infections. He has published over 170 research articles and around 15 book chapters.

Clinical Interests
Immunocompromised hosts and transplant infectious diseases. Recurrent bacterial infections. Multi-drug resistant bacterial infections.Research
Dr. Cervera's research areas involve infectious complications of solid organ transplant patients and bacterial infections. His doctoral thesis focused on the influence of innate immune receptors single nucleotide polymorphisms on the development of infections after solid organ transplantation. In terms of publications, Dr. Cervera has around 170 publications in peer-reviewed journals, more than 15 books chapters and several founded research grants.Teaching
My teaching philosophy is divided in 2 major areas. The first one is clinical teaching. I try to teach on the bedside, seeing patients and offering the fellows and students an actualized vision of the most frequent clinical issues. To do this I try to approach my students either in the routine clinical practice, discussing clinical cases, or in structured teaching classes. Informal teaching is one of the most efficient ways to obtain results because the student is able to identify problems and possible solutions based on the most recent literature. The second area in which I focus my teaching is in research and mentoring. My main purpose is to teach how to approach unresolved clinical problems through research and how to develop an academic career. I usually involve my students in clinical studies intended to introduce them to research methodology. One of my main priorities is research results dissemination through medical conferences and manuscript publication and I expect my students to publish, at least, one peer-reviewed manuscript of their research. My educational and teaching philosophy could be defined as "learning doing research" and this strategy has led to excellent academic outcomes for my students in the recent years.Featured Publications
