About

Clarence Wong, MD FRCPC CAGF AGAF FASGE, is a gastroenterologist and professor with the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta. After receiving his MD degree from the University of Alberta, he completed residencies in internal medicine at McMaster University and gastroenterology at the University of Alberta.

During his training, Dr. Wong was awarded research fellowships from both the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology for translational research in experimental oncology. He also completed a fellowship in endoscopic ultrasound and is a therapeutic endoscopist focusing on gastrointestinal cancers.

Personal Statement:

Gastrointestinal cancers are the most commonly diagnosed and responsible for more deaths from cancer than any other system in the body in Canada. Screening can save lives by finding and removing precancerous tissue and polyps. A major research and clinical focus for me is improving screening technologies, so that we have easy to use tests that are highly precise for patients in remote areas. I am also interested in pioneering innovative technologies such as endoscopic ablation and endoscopic resection techniques.

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Wong is the Section Chief for gastroenterology in the Edmonton zone. He was previously the provincial medical director of the Alberta Colorectal Cancer Screening program. He helped develop the SCOPE Edmonton zone colon cancer screening program that now performs over 15,000 screening procedures per year. He helped pilot the use of photodynamic therapy and radiofrequency ablation for people with advanced Barrett’s esophagus or esophageal cancer, enabling many of them to avoid life-altering surgery and chemotherapy. He was a member of the Expert Advisory Committee for the health technology assessment of the photodynamic therapy pilot project and director of academic technologies for the Faculty of Medicine. He is a member of the planning committee for the GI for GPs course. Dr. Wong is a past president of the Alberta Society of Gastroenterology.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Wong is an attending staff gastroenterologist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the University of Alberta Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute. He is the medical director of the Edmonton Endoscopic Ablation Program which treats Barrett’s esophagus and early upper gastrointestinal tract cancers. He performs endoscopic resections of early gastrointestinal cancers. He has an interest in novel endoscopic technologies and therapies.

Research

Dr. Wong’s research interests include medical education, clinical and laboratory innovations in colon cancer screening and Barrett’s esophagus. He received funding from Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and Alberta Innovates.

Teaching

Dr. Wong has received regional and national teaching awards for excellence in medical education including Endoscopy & Teacher of the Year from the University of Alberta GI Residency Training Program, Teacher of the Year from the University of Alberta Medical Students’ Association, Certificate of Merit from the Canadian Association of Medical Education, and the University of Alberta Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.
