Overview
Area of Study / Keywords
Ketogenic diet neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy brain tumour epilepsy infantile spasms
About
I am a clinician-investigator recruited in July 2025 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta.
I am a Pediatric Neurologist / Epileptologist in the Division of Neurology under the Department of Pediatrics.
I am an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology.
Research
My laboratory seeks to understand how the immature, injured brain responds to the ketogenic diet. To do this, we use rodent models to test the effects of the ketogenic diet in the following neurologic conditions: 1. neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. 2. pediatric brain cancers. 3. severe childhood epilepsies. We have optimized a method to deliver the ketogenic diet into pre-weaning rats, which allows us to examine the direct effects of enterally administered ketogenic diet in the immature brain.
Teaching
I teach resident physicians as they progress through their Pediatric Neurology training. I am also accepting graduate students in my laboratory.
Research Students
Currently accepting undergraduate students for research project supervision.
We are looking to recruit motivated summer undergraduate students AND graduate students! With regards to prospective graduate students, priority will be given to students who have wet lab research experience as well as a competitive CV for outside funding. To inquire about research opportunities, please send me an email with CV and personal statement.
