About

Personal Statement:

My career goal is to develop and grow a respected thrombosis program at the University of Alberta. To this end, I have cross-disciplinary collaborations at the local and national level and have focused my research, educational, clinical and administrative commitments to this important area in medicine.

Dr. Cynthia Wu is recognized in Edmonton for her expertise in venous thromboembolism (VTE). Dr. Wu’s medical school and internal medical residency training was completed at the University of Alberta and followed by a hematology residency at McMaster University in Hamilton. She was a clinical scholar and fellow in thrombosis at the Juravinski Center in Hamilton, returning to Alberta in 2010 to join the Division of Hematology.

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Wu is a thrombosis expert for consulting physicians. She created and is director of the Cancer Associated Thrombosis (CAT) Clinic located in the Kaye Edmonton Clinic. As of 2019, the CAT Clinic has had more than 4000 patient visits. Dr. Wu is also director of the new thrombosis elective rotation for medical trainees. She is a local principal investigator for various thrombosis clinical trials and heads thrombosis clinical trials within the Hematology Division. She is the Alberta lead for the Quality of Care and Effectiveness Research platform of the  Canadian Venous Thromboembolism Clinical Trials and Outcomes Research (Can VECTOR) Network.

Dr. Wu has won several awards during her training and academic career including a University of Alberta Hospital Champions of Care award, the Michael Mant award and Honourable Mention for the Teacher of the Year Award for Sub-specialties.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Wu is fulltime medical staff and attending physician at the University of Alberta Hospital. She is a clinical lead in VTE in Edmonton and serves as a consultant to colleagues both in and outside of the division and within the province.  She has worked on local and national committees for VTE including the Alberta Health Services’ guidelines for management and prevention of cancer-associated thrombosis. She participates in the Thrombosis Clinic and Cancer-Associated Thrombosis Clinic at the University of Alberta Hospital (Kaye Edmonton Clinic)

Research

Dr. Wu serves as the principal investigator of multiple thrombosis clinical trials and collaborates with basic scientists to investigate coagulation in aging and thrombosis. She created an Alberta-wide linked administrative database to study the epidemiology of VTE. She collaborates with other Canadian thrombosis experts and is the Alberta lead for the Quality and Improvement Platform of the CIHR funded CanVECTOR multicenter thrombosis research network.  She has received research funding from several agencies including the University Hospital Foundation, Calgary Clinical Research Fund, CanVECTOR, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Bayer, Pfizer, and Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

Her research as co-investigator has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals that include Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis, JAMA Internal Medicine and New England Journal of Medicine.

Teaching

Dr. Wu is involved in all levels of medical education, specializing in the field of VTE. She has created a Thrombosis rotation for trainees mainly targeted at internal medicine and hematology fellows. She provides clinical and research supervision to residents and fellows and informally mentors other trainees with an interest in hematology and thrombosis. Dr. Wu actively delivers many trainee educational sessions including academic half-day lectures, in-rotation small group sessions and grand rounds for multiple disciplines from the medical students to residents to fellows. Dr. Wu has co-supervised one successful masters student and one successful PhD student and continues to supervise as well as participate in committees for other graduate students. She also actively participates in delivering continuing medical education throughout the province.

Dr. Wu is a member of the Resident Training Committee for the Division of Hematology.
