About

I am an academic general internal medicine physician with a special interest in diabetes.

Clinical Interests

Most Monday afternoons, I have a half-day diabetes-focused outpatient internal medicine practice. Several weeks out of the year, I attend acutely ill hospital inpatients at University of Alberta Hospital.

Research

    Research-wise, I am interested in:

    • Outcomes of care
    • Value for cost
    • Effectiveness of medical therapies

... primarily as they relate to type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes is an important clinical and public health concern due to its high prevalence and increasing burden on patients, populations, and the health care system. There as recently been a wave of medical advances improving cardiovascular outcomes in this population with more anticipated. These new therapies will challenge our health care system to mitigate their risks, ensure appropriate uptake, provide adequate funding for access, and to optimize our healthcare delivery models.

    Examples of current projects

    • Evaluating the effects on health care utilization of a regional diabetes foot care clinical pathway.
    • SGLT2 inhibitor care gap in Alberta
    • Time-to-treatment intensification in patients with diabetes - Alberta trends and implications for GLP1 receptor agonist prescribing.

I am always looking for new opportunities and welcome any correspondence about potential projects.

    Teaching

I enjoy teaching internal medicine to medical learners on-the-job, as well as in more formal settings.  I am a believer in the role of the "generalist-specialist".  My eventual goal will be to foment a passion for both outpatient and inpatient general internal medicine in any learner I encounter.
