About

Dr. Joanne Rodger is currently appointed as Assistant Dean, Program Evaluation & Director, Program Quality & Accreditation in the MD Program in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Additionally, she is appointed as an Adjunct Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Education. Joanne has experience working in K-12 education, public and school libraries, the nonprofit sector, and has been teaching at the University of Alberta for more than 20 years.


Research

Dr. Rodger's research program explores various aspects of medical education, emotional labour in public library work, teacher-librarian education, teaching, and learning. Recent projects include the development of an online workshop for public library workers about emotional labour that was released in July 2023 based on research conducted in 2020 about public library workers' experiences with emotional labour. Additional recent projects have focused on the ways in which school library faculty members use their time and an evaluation of an academic mentorship program for medical students. 


Teaching

Dr. Rodger teaches graduate courses in the Faculty of Education, including LIS 503, Reference & Information Services; LIS 595, Issues & Trends in Public Libraries; EDEL 540, Introduction to Teacher-Librarianship; EDEL 544, Introduction to Emerging Technologies; EDEL 543, Introduction to Contemporary Literacies; EDEL 545, Integration of Emerging Technologies; and EDEL 546, Introduction to Resource Selection and Evaluation.

EDEL 495 - Seminar in Group Projects in Elementary Education II

EDEL 542 - Theory and Practice of Inquiry-Based Teaching and Learning

Explores and critically evaluates the nature and culture of inquiry and the integration of inquiry in teaching and learning. Note: Not open to students with credit in EDES 542. Sections may be offered at an increased rate of fee assessment; refer to the Tuition and Fees page in the University Regulations sections of the Calendar.


LIS 503 - Reference and Information Services

An introduction to reference and information services and resources. Includes history and varieties of reference services, user populations, instruction, ethics, access issues, the reference interview, search strategies, evaluation of services, and the organization, selection, evaluation, and use of major information resources. Required course. Sections may be offered at an increased rate of fee assessment; refer to the Tuition and Fees page in the University Regulations sections of the Calendar. Pre or corequisite: LIS 501 or consent of instructor.
