Professor, Family Medicine

Previous Academic Positions: Associate Dean and Division Director, Community Engagement. This portfolio includes responsibilities for Global, Indigenous, inner city, rural & regional health and community engaged research.

Associate Dean, Rural & Regional Health, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta; Associate Dean, Admissions and Student Affairs, Northern Ontario School of Medicine

Degrees received are: Honours BA in political science (Carleton University), MD and residency in Family Medicine (University of Calgary) and a Masters in Clinical Sciences in Family Medicine (Western University). 

Clinical Practice:  Comprehensive rural family physician until recruited to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in 2003 as the first Associate Dean, Admissions and Student Affairs. Currently one of four physicians on regular rotation to provide service in Fort Chipewyan (1 week every 4 to 6 weeks) and doing locums for comprehensive rural family physicians.

Educational Initiatives: Longitudinal integrated clerkship (Rural Integrated Community Clerkship) initiated in 2007; Preclinical Networked Medical Education Initiative (delivery of a 2nd year preclinical course in rural/regional communities) initiated in 2010; Aboriginal Health rotation implemented in 2015; Community Service Learning Elective; Year 4 Clerkship in Grande Prairie; Social Justice Community of Service & Scholarship; member of a working group of 4 that developed a framework and recommendations for the rural medical education program at the Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Kathmandu Nepal; invited member of International Advisory Group for the developent of a liberal arts university, the University of Nepal, as an expert in community engagement/social accountability

Professional Activities: Current: Chair of the Association of Faculties of Medicine Distributed Medical Education Network; Member of planning group for the International Consortium of Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships; Member and Chair-elect Awards & Recognition Committee Alberta College of Family Physicians

Significant Previous Professional Activities: Board Member Boyle McCauley Health Centre; Board Member CASA Board; Membership in the College of Family Physicians of Canada Curriculum Working Group that developed the new national Family Medicine residency curriculum; membership in the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Future of Medical Education in Canada - Postgraduate Steering Committee; Co-Chair of FMEC-PG Working Group on Learning and Working Environment; Past President, Society of Rural Physicians of Canada; Past President, Alberta College of Family Physicians, Past Member Alberta Medical Association Board

Research Interests: rural medical education, longitudinal integrated clerkships, professional identity formation, rural health care delivery, interprofessional education, social accountability.
