About

Personal Statement:

My research activity has included investigations into several of pulmonary conditions. Currently, I am part of research efforts that are focused on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma, with an interest in physical activity and resulting lung function in patients with these conditions. My goal is to understand how we can better control COPD and asthma through therapeutic and exercise approaches.

Eric Wong graduated from the University of Alberta’s medical school and completed residencies in internal medicine and respirology also at the University of Alberta. Dr. Wong obtained a Master’s in Epidemiology from McMaster University and returned to Edmonton to complete a clinical fellowship in pulmonary sciences. He joined the Division of Pulmonary Medicine in 1997.

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Wong is medical director of the pulmonary function laboratories at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute. He is a member of many clinical, health services and academic committees, among them the Pulmonary Section Medical and Core Group for Alberta Health Services; the Alberta Respiratory Centre Research at the University of Alberta; the Residency Training Committee for the Pulmonary Division; the Airways Working Group of the Respiratory Health Strategic Clinical Network and the Pulmonary Function Diagnostics Advisory Committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Dr. Wong is an examiner for the Medical Council of Canada qualifying examination.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Wong is a pulmonologist on staff at the University of Alberta Hospital and the University Lung Clinic.  He specializes in COPD and lung cancer.

Research

Dr. Wong has been a principal investigator or a co-investigator on several research projects that span investigations into early detection of lung cancer; medication assessment in asthma; nitric oxide and exercise tolerance in COPD; and asthma exacerbations, exercise and vascular function. His research has been supported by funding from the University Hospital Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

He has been an invited speaker at many national and international scientific conferences presenting on asthma, lung cancer, COPD and cardiovascular conditions that involve lung function. He is a reviewer for the Canadian Respiratory Journal and Canadian Medical Association Journal.

Dr. Wong’s research has been published in peer review journals including BMC Pulmonary Medicine, Journal of Physiology, and Respiratory Medicine.

Teaching

Dr. Wong has presented at numerous continuing medical education sessions around the province on pulmonary health topics including CPD and pulmonary function testing.
