Personal Statement:

Geriatric Medicine aims to improve the quality of life of seniors as they age by addressing not only the medical aspects of their care but also their cognitive, psychiatric, functional and social needs. With the ageing of the population, there is an ever-increasing need to train health care professionals with expertise in caring for the elderly.

Geriatrician Fiona Lawson is a graduate of the University of Glasgow’s medical school. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alberta followed by subspecialty training in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Alberta and the University of Ottawa. This was followed by a clinical research appointment in Geriatrics at the University of Ottawa. She was appointed assistant clinical professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Alberta in 1999. 

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Lawson was the program director of the Residency Program in Geriatric Medicine for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry from 2007 to 2019.  In 2015, she received a Champion of Care award and in 2019, she was honoured with a CAME (Canadian Association of Medical Education) Certificate of Merit award for her contributions to medical education.



Clinical Interests

Dementia, delirium, medical education.

Dr. Lawson cares for outpatients at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic and inpatients as a member of the Geriatric consultation team at the University of Alberta Hospital.


Research

Dr. Lawson has published several clinical research papers in journals that include Journal of the American Geriatric Society, Canadian Journal of Cardiology, Circulation, and British Medical Journal.


Teaching

Dr. Lawson is involved in classroom, workshop and bedside teaching and supervision of both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate medical trainees. She is also active in continuing medical education through workshops, grand rounds and seminars on subjects pertinent to geriatric medicine for health professionals.
