Personal Statement:
I combine my love of clinical care and medical education with on-site clinical instruction and supervision of trainees at the University of Alberta Hospital. In addition to helping trainees develop clinical competency, I provide them with mentoring in several important areas. These include how to balance a demanding clinical practice and family life, and to work and communicate effectively with other health professionals on a care team, patients and their families.
Fraulein Morales graduated from the University of the East�s medical school in the Philippines. She completed internal medicine residency training at the State University of New York in Brooklyn, New York and a general internal medicine (GIM) fellowship at the University of Alberta. She holds a certificate in medical education from the University of Dundee, Scotland. In 2006 Dr. Morales was appointed assistant professor of medicine and in 2007 undergraduate and graduate principal teaching physician at the University of Alberta Hospital. She was promoted to associate clinical professor in 2014.
Leadership and Collaborations:
Dr. Morales holds several internal and external leadership positions, including that of Zone Clinical Department Facility Chief, Medicine. where she leads the clinical service operations and collaborations with other departments. Dr. Morales was the site chief for general internal medicine (GIM) at the University of Alberta Hospital, the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) director for the Internal Medicine Clerkship from 2010 to 2019 and oral exams director for year IV internal medicine residents from 2016 to 2019. She is the Director of the Clinical Faculty at the Department of Medicine . She contributes to the recognition of clinical faculty to the research, education and clinical mission of the Department as the chair of the Clinical Faculty Promotion Committee. She also serves on several other institutional committees that address a range of medical education, practice and knowledge topics.
Dr. Morales has garnered numerous teaching awards throughout her residency and faculty appointments, including five Teacher of the Year awards and honourable mentions and the Internal Medicine Resident Osler Award.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Morales is site chief for GIM at the University of Alberta Hospital where she is attending physician and fulltime medical staff.
Research
Dr. Morales’ clinical research includes a quality improvement project focused on laboratory test ordering overuse funded by Alberta Health Services. She is co-principal investigator of clinical trials evaluating therapies for cardiovascular conditions funded by the National Institutes of Health and by Merck. She is co-author on publications in peer-reviewed journals including Canadian Journal of GIM, Canadian Journal of Cardiology, American Journal of Hypertension and New England Journal of Medicine.
Teaching
Dr. Morales is a classroom instructor and clinical supervisor for medical students and residents on the University of Alberta Hospital site. She actively contributes to exam preparation and reviewer for residents and GIM subspecialists. Her educational scholarship includes contributing to the online Canadian IMGs Guide to the OSCEs and the GIM Consult Curriculum.
