About

Fernando Riesgo Gil is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Alberta and an advanced heart failure, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support cardiologist at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

Dr. Riesgo Gil completed his cardiology training in Spain before undertaking an Advanced Heart Failure, Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support fellowship at the University of Alberta from 2013 to 2015. He then completed a fellowship in Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Royal Brompton Hospital in London from 2015 to 2016.

In 2016, he joined Harefield Hospital, where he returned to the field of advanced heart failure and transplantation and developed his career as a consultant cardiologist in heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and advanced heart failure. During his time at Harefield, he held several leadership roles in the heart transplant programme, including Clinical Lead for Heart Transplant Medicine and, most recently, Director of the Transplant Programme.

His clinical and academic interests include advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, durable mechanical circulatory support, cardiogenic shock, and advanced heart failure in adults with congenital heart disease.

In 2026, Dr. Riesgo Gil returned to the University of Alberta and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, where his work focuses on the care of patients with advanced heart failure and on the continued development of the heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support programs.
