About

Personal Statement

I am interested in all aspects of cardiac disease and its outcomes, particularly in cardiac rehabilitation and primary and secondary prevention of heart disease. I want to improve cardiac outcomes by developing and supporting a team approach to care; for example, I work with nurses, nurse practitioners and pharmacists in an attempt to implement new approaches to diabetes care, therapies and overall vascular prevention.

General cardiologist Dr. Gabor Gyenes is a graduate of Semmelweis Medical University in Budapest, Hungary where he also completed general internal medicine and cardiology training. Following his clinical training, he obtained a from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Dr. Gyenes was recruited to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and completed an interventional clinical fellowship at the University of Toronto. He was recruited to the University of Alberta in 2001. Over his he has assumed several leadership roles in the cardiology field and garnered awards for his research and teaching.

Leadership and Collaborations

Dr. Gyenes is cardiac rehabilitation chief for the Edmonton Zone Cardiac Sciences of Alberta Health Services. He is director of the Jim Pattison Center for Heart Health (Cardiac Rehabilitation) within the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and director of the Cardiology Patient Triage and Navigation program. Past leadership roles include that of medical director for the cardiology ward and co-director of the Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Clinic.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Gyenes is a general cardiologist with Alberta Health Services at the University of Alberta Hospital who cares for patients with a variety of cardiac problems. He is particularly interested in primary and secondary vascular prevention. In 2010, he co-established a Risk Reduction Clinic for patients with rheumatic disease and developed an algorithm used in the clinic that systematically assessed patient’s cardiac risk factors. He is currently working on developing a new program model for cardiac rehabilitation in the Edmonton region that will maintain quality of care while decreasing costs.

Research

In his clinical research, Dr. Gyenes studies a range of cardiac topics such as secondary prevention, outcomes of acute coronary syndromes, stable coronary artery disease, radiation-induced heart disease, and cardiac rehabilitation in specific patient populations. His work receives funding from several sources including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Heart and Stroke Foundation and the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation. In addition to his involvement with international multi-centre trials, he conducts industry-sponsored clinical trials to assess the effectiveness of specific drugs in treating cardiac conditions.

Teaching

Dr. Gyenes mentors medical students interested in cardiology, residents, nurse practitioners and international medical graduate students. He presents frequently to medical trainees and professional on grand rounds, and in cardiology practice updates and in continuing medical education sessions.  He has won three awards for his teaching excellence.
