Dr. Tyrrell is from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where he obtained his BSc and MSC before completing a PhD at the University of Toronto. After completion of his PhD, Dr. Tyrrell completed a 2 year Clinical Microbiology Fellowship Program also at the University of Toronto. After completing the Clinical Microbiology Fellowship program, Dr. Tyrrell worked for two years as a Clinical Microbiologist at Dalhousie University located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He subsequently moved back to Edmonton where is currently a practicing Clinical Microbiologist in the Alberta Provincial Laboratory for Public Health (ProvLAB) and a Professor in the Division of Diagnostic and Applied Microbiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Alberta. He has worked as a Clinical Microbiologist in the ProvLAB in Alberta for over 22 years overseeing a variety of clinical programs including the Level 3 laboratory, TB program and Streptococcal program. His research interests encompass the epidemiology of streptococcal diseases including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Group A and Group B streptococci. He has served on a number of vaccine advisory groups in Canada focusing on pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccines.  In his role as a Professor at the University of Alberta, Dr. Tyrrell has been involved in the teaching, supervision and training of numerous Undergraduate and Graduate students as well as Medical Residents in the field of Medical Microbiology. In addition to his roles as a Clinical Microbiologist and Professor, Dr. Tyrrell is also the Edmonton Zone Clinical Department Section Chief for Medical Microbiology and Divisional Director for the Division of Diagnostic and Applied Microbiology.
