About

Personal Statement

My passion is to ensure my patients have the best possible outcomes from treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and to ensure we have the most effective and advanced endoscopic tools at hand to deliver that treatment. Advances in endoscopic intervention have made a significant impact on our ability to diagnose and deliver less invasive treatment for conditions previously treated only with surgery.  I am committed to the broad sharing of new knowledge so that consistency in excellent patient care is achieved.

Dr. Gurpal Sandha graduated from the Christian Medical College, Punjab University, India and did his residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio. He then completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia followed by advanced training in therapeutic endoscopy at the Wellesley Hospital, University of Toronto and endoscopic ultrasonography at the Université de Montréal. He was recruited to the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta in 2002 and is currently Professor in the Department of Medicine.

Leadership and Collaborations

Dr. Sandha is Director of the Allan Owen Endoscopy Suite at the University of Alberta Hospital. Soon after he joined the Department of Medicine, he established endoscopic ultrasound, and a few years later, cholangioscopy, as standards of care in two new programs for a variety of gastrointestinal disorders.

He has served in several leadership roles in the area of endoscopy including as Program Director of the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship Program for the University of Alberta, Director of Endoscopy at the University of Alberta Hospital, and a member of the Medical Advisory Board of Boston Scientific Corporation.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Sandha uses advanced endoscopic techniques to diagnose and treat a variety of gastrointestinal diseases including cancers. These techniques include endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) including interventional EUS, pancreatico-biliary endoscopy (ERCP) including cholangioscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of large polyps, and the placement of endoluminal metal stents (esophageal, enteral, biliary, and colonic stents).

Teaching

Dr. Sandha has won several awards for his teaching excellence including the Osler Resident Award from general internal medicine residents and the Endoscopy Teaching award from gastroenterology residents. He is integrally involved in the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship training program at the University of Alberta.
