About
I am an academic cardiologist, with a passion for utilising advanced cardiac imaging techniques to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
The majority of my clinical academic training was completed in the UK. I graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2012 and undertook a Royal College of Physicians' accredited specialty training program in cardiology, advanced imaging and heart failure in the East Midlands. I spent a year at the University of British Columbia for an Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship in St Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, in 2021. Alongside my clinical cardiology training, I completed an MRes in Applied Health Research in 2018 and a PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences in 2020, both at the University of Leicester.
I moved to the University of Alberta and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in 2026 for my current faculty position.
Research
My primary research focus is on early detection and treatment of cardiac dysfunction in people with cardiometabolic diseases, particularly obesity and type 2 diabetes. This has been through an array of experimental studies, including observational cohort studies and Phase 2 randomised trials of drug and/or lifestyle interventions. Other research areas include optimising the diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility of cardiac MRI imaging methods, novel biomarkers for early cardiovascular disease detection, and treatment of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
