Overview

About

B.Sc. Biology and Chemistry (Manchester Metropolitan University, UK)

M.Phil. Organic Chemistry (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology - UMIST, UK)

Ph.D. Organic Chemistry (Durham University, UK).

Dr. Wan has been the Director of Undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratories at the University of Alberta since 2009. She is responsible for management and coordination of the laboratory component of the organic chemistry courses (CHEM 164, 261, 263, 361, 363), as well as training and supervision of the teaching assistants.

Research

Dr. Wan's background is in the area of synthetic organic chemistry and asymmetric catalysis. Current research interests include chemical education and the development of a modern, engaging laboratory curriculum for undergraduate students, as well as the development of novel teaching tools for the enhancement of student learning in organic chemistry.

Scholarly Activities

Teaching - Development of A Virtual Organic Chemistry Laboratory (Virtu-O-Chem)

2010 to 2013

A virtual organic chemistry laboratory was developed as an extra study resource for both introductory and advanced level chemistry students. With this new virtual lab, students can become familiar with the equipment and reactions through a series of online simulations prior to the laboratory class. This will allow for better preparation for the lab resulting in a safer work environment as well as increased learning and understanding.

Funding provided by TLEF (University of Alberta)

Teaching - Mastering Spectroscopy App

2016 to 2019

An organic spectroscopy app (developed in collaboration with Onlea) to help students in the learning of IR and NMR spectroscopy, and organic structure determination. The app is available on both the App Store and Google Play Store.

(Funding provided by Faculty of Science - Teaching Innovation Fund)
