Overview

About

Dr. Isabelle Chiu received her MD from the University of Toronto.  This was followed by an Internal Medicine residency and an Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Alberta. In addition to her clinical practice in the Edmonton area, Dr. Chiu participates in clinical research around potential new therapies for infectious diseases. She has led many initiatives in the infectious diseases field including guideline development and program planning and implementation. She is an active medical educator within the Department of Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, for both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees and is involved with education on the national level through her work with the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Canada (AMMI Canada).

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Chiu was the founder of the Outpatient IV Therapy Clinic at the Grey Nuns Hospital and served as its medical director until her relocation to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in 2004, where she assumed the role of medical director of the Outpatient Antimicrobial Therapy Clinic, a role she continues to serve today.

For six years, Dr. Chiu served as the President and Fees Rep of the Section of Infectious Diseases of the Alberta Medical Association (AMA).  In addition, she was the AMA’s representative forum delegate for many years.  She was recognized by the AMA in Sep 2015 with a Long Service Award.  Dr. Chiu served as President of the Alberta Society of Infectious Diseases for two years.

Dr. Chiu assumed the role of Program Director for the Adult Infectious Diseases Training Program for the University of Alberta on July 1, 2020.

Dr. Chiu was a director on the Council of AMMI Canada from 2017-2021.  She was a member of the governance board of the Journal of Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, which is published by AMMI Canada.  She was Chair of AMMI Canada’s Program Planning Committee and the Co-Chair of the Scientific Planning Committee for the organization’s annual conference from 2012-2020.  Dr. Chiu also served as vice-chair of accreditation and CPD for the Education and Continuing Education Committee of AMMI Canada.  For her contributions to AMMI Canada, Dr. Chiu was presented with the Award of Distinction in 2021.  In 2023, she was named Fellow of AMMI Canada (FAMMI) for her many contributions to the association.

For her many contributions to the Infectious Diseases community locally, provincially and nationally, she was awarded Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA) in 2019.



Clinical Interests

Dr. Chiu is an infectious diseases consultant at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, where she is also medical director of the Outpatient Antimicrobial Therapy Clinic. She is a member of the hospital’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Working Group.  She also provides consultation support for the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.


Research

Dr. Chiu participated in clinical trials involving HIV and Hepatitis C care.


Teaching

Dr. Chiu is a preceptor for undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees. She is the recipient of several teaching awards. She served as the section lead for the undergraduate medical education Infectious Diseases curriculum and has been involved with whole class lectures as well as preceptor for small group discovery learning. She is the Program Director for Adult Infectious Diseases Training Program at the University of Alberta and is involved with program and curriculum development.  She has been actively involved with continuing professional development (CPD) through participation as a speaker in CPD events as well as through her work with AMMI Canada.
