Jeffrey A. Bakal, PhD, P.Stat., is a biostatistician and Program Director for Provincial Research Data Services at Alberta Health Services, affiliated with the University of Alberta, where he leads initiatives under the Alberta Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) SUPPORT Unit, and as a Clinical Lecturer in the Division of General Internal Medicine. His research primarily centers on clinical epidemiology, with a emphasis on disease incidence, mortality trends, and readmission risks; frailty's prognostic impact on hospitalized patients; and innovative approaches to interventions to optimize therapeutic benefits. Bakal has also contributed to studies on quality of life in vision impairment, emergency department management of acute conditions, and disparities in neurodevelopmental disorders among Métis children in Canada. With over 12,000 citations, his work includes seminal publications on declining in-hospital mortality post-myocardial infarction and the association between frailty and post-discharge outcomes, informing evidence-based strategies to improve patient care and health system efficiency.
