Overview

About

Dr. Jonathan Choy completed his medical education at the University of Alberta in 1992.  After completing his Internal Medicine training at the University of Manitoba (1993-1996) he returned to Edmonton to complete training in Cardiology and Echocardiography (1996-2000).  He also spent time at the University of Bonn, Germany (2000) and Oxford University, UK (20007) to develop a special expertise in myocardial contrast perfusion echocardiography.  He has been a clinical academic cardiologist since 2000 and is currently practicing at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.  As a Clinical Professor of Medicine, he served as the Assistant Chair for Clinical Faculty in the Department of Medicine (2014-2017).  During this time, he has advocated for clinical colleagues in the Department of Medicine, provided mentorship to junior Faculty members, and encouraged recognition of Clinical Faculty through the promotions process. As the Associate Dean for Clinical Faculty,he encouraged representation and recognition of clinical colleagues in clinical innovation, teaching, administrative leadership and research.  

He also served as Edmonton Zone Representative with the Alberta Medical Association, and was one of two AMA representatives on the Physician Compensation Committee. In 2014 he completed an executive MBA from the Sauder School of Business, UBC in Healthcare Management with the goals of combining clinical expertise and administrative leadership to promote a more sustainable publicly funded healthcare system in Canada.   

A sought after teacher, mentor and a compassionate physician, Dr. Choy has received awards for undergraduate medical teaching and mentorship, as well as a Faculty award for Humanism.   


He enjoys leisure time with his wife (fellow cardiologist) and three children, engaging in downhill skiing, creating chamber music, golfing or travelling, and trying to learn foreign languages.
