In addition to residency training in Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine, Dr Franc holds a Diploma in Sports Medicine and a Masters Degree in Disaster Medicine. Working at the University of Alberta Hospital since 1998, he splits his clinical duties between the adult and pediatric emergency departments. He is a Visiting Professor of Disaster Medicine at both the Universita' del Piemonte Orientale in Italy, and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium. From 2010 to 2015, he served as the AHS Provincial Medical Director for Emergency/Disaster Management.


Dr Franc has over 25 years of experience as a Linux system administrator and full-stack web developer. He has extensive knowledge in data mining and machine learning using R, PHP, Python, and MySQL. An avid software developer, he is the founder of a number of innovative software solutions in emergency department simulation, healthcare cyber-security, artificial intelligence guided decision support, and statistical computing.


Dr Franc brings a wealth of experience in statistics and research methodology with a Masters Degree in Statistics (Quality Engineering) from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is a senior statistician at the CRIMEDIM research center in Novara, Italy and the chief data scientist at the SimNova simulation center at the Universita' del Piemonte Orientale. With a dynamic style for teaching statistics to learners at all levels, he coordinates the research methodology module at the European Master in Disaster Medicine. He has published extensively in emergency medicine and disaster medicine literature on disaster management, disaster medicine training, surge capacity modeling, triage, and simulation.


"In my experience, truly innovative research comes from multidisciplinary teams of clinicians and methodologists. One of my major focuses will be to leverage existing and emerging information technologies to facilitate these collaborations, " explains Dr Franc. As Research Director, he envisions the use of the business incubator model as a platform to assist students, residents, and faculty in reaching their research goals. He looks forward to collaborating with clinicians in the Faculty of Medicine, content experts at the University of Alberta, and other partners internationally.

EMDM is a Master after Masters course accredited by the Free University of Brussels and the University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy. The course provides education and training in all aspects of disaster medicine for planners, key personnel and all actors involved in the disaster medical and health response.
