About

Dr. Jake Hayward is an early career academic emergency physician focusing his research on the use of secondary data (administrative and EMR) for point of care clinical decision support, data-informed policy making and improved quality and safety of care. He completed his emergency medicine residency at the University of Alberta in 2019 and a Masters of Public Health at Johns Hopkins in 2020.


Research

Current projects include:

  • Use of administrative and EMR data to understand and predict risks associated with opioid-based pain management in the ED
  • Exploring the potential for wearable sensors (e.g. smartwatches) and virtual medicine platforms to improve transitions of care
  • Understanding the cognitive processes that underpin medical error using survey and simulation methods
  • Use of machine learning and EMR data for patient-level disease risk estimation to inform clinical decision support and physician performance metrics
