Dr. Jay Max Findlay (Max) was born and raised in Burnaby, British Columbia, along with four siblings, by a prematurely widowed mother.  His mother directed Max towards medicine and he graduated from the UBC medical school in 1982 with the highest marks in his class. After interning and then training in neurosurgery in Toronto and the University of Toronto, Max moved to the University of Alberta to obtain a PhD in the legendary Dr. Bryce Weir laboratory studying vasospasm after aneurysm rupture. Edmonton became home for Max, his wife Sheila and the family that followed. Max practices general and vascular neurosurgery with a special interest in micro-neurosurgery, and in years past he played an important role introducing the surgical microscope into all types of neurosurgical procedures. He has most recently joined the new Gamma Knife Radiosurgery program and team at the University of Alberta. He has also been engaged in research, writing, teaching and administration.

At a national level Max is a past president of the Canadian Neurosurgical Society, former Chair of the Royal College Examination Committee for Neurosurgery, and most recently is past President of the Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation.

He has been a Divisional Director, Program Director for neurosurgical training and Site Leader for neurosurgery at the University of Alberta Hospital.

Max and his wife Sheila have three now grown children and an old Airedale terrier. Besides his love of neurosurgery, Max likes sports (especially skiing in the Rocky Mountains), collecting art (a very bad habit), and experimenting in the kitchen (with occasional success).
