Dr. Jenny Souster was raised with her four brothers in Sundre, Alberta. Following high school she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and an MD degree at the University of Calgary. She ventured north to Edmonton for her postgraduate training and became the first woman to complete the University of Alberta Neurosurgery Residency Program. She then attended the University of Southern California where she completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Souster returned to the University of Alberta in 2012. While working within the Division of Neurosurgery, she also completed a Master’s Degree in Education with a research focus on imposter syndrome among surgical residents.
Dr. Souster is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta. She is one of two pediatric neurosurgeons at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Her practice interests include pediatric neuro-oncology, neuro-endoscopy, spina bifida, Chiari malformation and craniofacial surgery. She also maintains an adult practice, specializing in endoscopic pituitary surgery and Cushing’s disease, as well as complex adult hydrocephalus. Her research interests focus on surgical training, surgical outcomes in pituitary surgery and post-traumatic stress disorder among caregivers of children with neurosurgical problems. Outside of neurosurgery, her time is focused on her husband and two young children, Knox (6) and Esmé (4).
