About
Personal Statement
As a transplant specialist, I want to ensure the environment I am working in is the best for producing knowledge, training the next generation and most of all, offering optimal care and quality of life to people who undergo lung transplantation. These objectives are achieved through clinical innovations, education, and research. The determination of the patients and of health care providers who dedicate themselves to the program inspire my work.
Dr. Justin Weinkauf earned his Medical Degree with Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan in 1997. He subsequently completed core internal medicine and residencies at the University of Alberta and a clinical fellowship in lung transplantation at Stanford University. He became a faculty member at the University of Alberta in 2002. Since then, through clinical service, educational leadership, research and administrative roles, he has contributed to the University of Alberta’s international leadership in lung transplantation. The University of Alberta lung transplant program has the highest volume lung transplant program per capita in Canada with the best short- and long-term survival rates of any other program in the country.
Other successes directly resulting from his work in the transplantation field are increased rates of organ donations, the development of a bridging program for people with severe respiratory failure awaiting transplantation, amalgamation of the Winnipeg Lung Transplant Program with the University of Alberta’s program, successful treatment of donor acquired hepatitis C post-lung transplant, and the first organ transplant in Alberta using a donation after Medical Assistance in Dying.
Dr. Weinkauf has been honoured throughout his career for his mentorship and patient care.
Leadership and Collaborations
Dr. Weinkauf is a team leader of the Lung Transplant Program at the University of Alberta, which in 2010 received the Cooperation, Collaboration & Teamwork Award from the Department of Medicine. In 2016, He was awarded the Neal F. Brown Award of Excellence in Pulmonary Medicine. In both 2017 and 2018, he received the Champion of Care Award from the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation. He serves on the Lung Transplant Management Committee, the Education Committee of the Alberta Transplant Institute, the Pulmonary Executive Committee, the Pulmonary Medicine Subspecialty Residency Training Committee and is Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Solid Organ Transplant Area of Focused Competency Diploma Program."
Clinical Interests
Dr. Weinkauf is a fulltime medical staff member at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
Research
Dr. Weinkauf has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and abstracts from his clinical research and is a sought-after speaker at conferences and meetings held to advance knowledge in the transplantation field.
Teaching
Dr. Weinkauf provides clinical and research supervision to residents and fellows and has developed medical education curriculum specific to training in transplantation. In addition to his curriculum contributions, he provides classroom instruction and coordinates pulmonary subspecialty electives for pulmonary and internal medicine trainees. He has a key educational leadership role nationally as the Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Solid Organ Transplant Area of Focused Competency Diploma Program.
