About
Dr. Khurshid Khan is a neurologist with subspecialty fellowship training in cerebrovascular disorders (stroke). He did his neurology training at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and Stroke Fellowship at the University of Alberta, Canada. Dr. Khan is currently appointed as Professor of Neurology in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
Leadership and Collaborations
Dr. Khan is Director of the Stroke Fellowship Program at the University of Alberta - one of the largest stroke fellowship programs in Canada. Several fellows from across the world have successfully graduated and are now leading stroke programs at their respective institutions. Dr. Khan also served as Director of the Adult Neurology Residency Program.
Dr. Khan is one of the lead stroke neurologists who initiated the Tele-Stroke Program at the University of Alberta, which serves a vast area of northern Alberta. He has been chairing the annual Stroke and Headache Conference for many years. He also chaired the annual Neurology Update Conference from 2010 to 2016. Dr. Khan has served on the Canadian Telestroke Best Practice Guidelines and Alberta Provincial Stroke Program. He is a recipient of Patient Care Champion Award from the University Hospital Foundation and Alberta Health Services REACH Program Innovation Award for establishment of the Stroke Telehealth program.
Research
Dr. Khan’s main research interest is in cerebral flow dynamics using Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound in ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage and sickle cell disease. Dr. Khan has authored or co-authored several papers. Several of his fellowship trainees have received international awards for their work on Transcranial and Carotid Doppler ultrasound.
Teaching
Dr. Khan is a clinician educator who uses scholarly methods of integration and application to promote excellence in his educational and clinical contributions and innovations. He is involved with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He also actively contributes to supervising international medical graduates.
