About

Dr. Meena Kalluri is an interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary fibrosis expert. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, USA and fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at MUSC in Charleston, South Carolina, USA.

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Kalluri is the founder and director of the Multidisciplinary Collaborative Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD) Clinic at the University of Alberta. The clinic uses a patient and family centered approach with early-integrated palliative care intended to improve health related quality of life and death in fibrotic lung diseases like Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. The clinic provides access to advanced therapies, lung transplantation if needed, participation in clinical trials, symptom self-management and ongoing education. They work with community partners to provide care at home when needed so patients can live in their own homes for as long as possible. Patients can also access ILD specific rehabilitation program, a unique program developed by the clinic. The clinic works closely with several non-profit agencies such as the Edmonton Pulmonary Fibrosis Association, Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, Alberta Lung Association and the government to advocate and raise awareness of IPF.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Kalluri’s clinic has been recognized provincially by Alberta Healthcare Services and nationally by the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement as an emerging innovation in palliative and end-of-life care. The clinic’s multi-disciplinary team has developed innovative strategies to treat dyspnea and promote better quality of life including patient centric goals in IPF.

Research

Dr. Kalluri’s current research projects focus on assessments and treatments of dyspnea and other symptoms in ILD, developing advance care planning for IPF, educational interventions for patients and caregivers, describing the impact of this care model on health outcomes, and related economic analysis.

Teaching

Dr. Kalluri is an award-winning instructor who supervises students, residents and fellows in classrooms and in clinical settings for pulmonary care. She created a four-week rotation called Multidisciplinary Clinical Teams for general internal medicine residents, that emphasizes collaboration and patient-centric teamwork. This unique rotation is recognized as one of the best ambulatory experiences. She has also created a peer-reviewed online bank of ILD cases; a bank of lectures on various ILDs including symptom management and end of life care for trainees and allied health professionals; biweekly multidisciplinary ILD rounds attended by trainees from different disciplines; and a peer-reviewed endobronchial ultrasound reading curriculum.
