Area of Study / Keywords

Inflammatory Skin Disease; Laser Dermatology; Clinical Trials Drug Development and Real World Evidence in Clinical Dermatology

About

Dr Kashini Andrew MD, M.Sc. MRCP(UK), FRCP, is a UK-trained Consultant Dermatologist based in Edmonton and a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Alberta. His clinical practice encompasses medical, surgical, and procedural dermatology, with particular interests in inflammatory dermatoses.

Research

Inflammatory and Autoimmune Skin Disease

My work explores cytokine-mediated mechanisms in inflammatory skin conditions, including interleukin-6 in pemphigus vulgaris and interleukin-36 in generalized pustular psoriasis.

Real-World Outcomes and Clinical Epidemiology

I have participated in multicentre registry research assessing systemic therapies for atopic dermatitis and contributed to population-based epidemiologic research in rare skin tumours. My interests include health services research, disease burden assessment, and long-term safety monitoring of immunomodulatory treatments.

Laser and Procedural Dermatology

I have led retrospective and service-evaluation studies examining laser hair depilation therapy in pilonidal sinus disease and other procedural dermatology applications. My work evaluates safety, treatment protocols, and long-term outcomes, with an interest in expanding access to evidence-based laser therapies.

Emerging Technologies

I am also interested in the evolving role of artificial intelligence in skin cancer recognition and clinical workflow optimisation within dermatology practice.

My current research aims to strengthen collaboration between community and academic dermatology settings, leveraging real-world clinical data to inform practice guidelines and improve patient-centred care.

Teaching

I contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in dermatology. My teaching includes didactic lectures, case-based discussions, and clinical supervision focused on diagnostic reasoning, inflammatory dermatoses, skin cancer recognition, and procedural dermatology.

I emphasise practical dermatology for primary care and early learners, equipping trainees with structured approaches to common and high-impact skin conditions. My sessions integrate clinical imagery, dermoscopy principles, and evidence-based management pathways.

I am particularly committed to mentoring trainees interested in dermatology and supporting research engagement among students and residents. My goal is to foster analytical thinking, clinical confidence, and safe procedural practice in dermatologic care.
