About

Personal Statement

Caring for the more than 15% of Canadians who have arthritis involves all aspects of the medical profession, how we care for people, share knowledge and work together, and ensure standards of excellence in practice.  For me, it’s all about education: for trainees, for colleagues and other health professionals, and for patients. Knowledge empowers care and improves outcomes.

Dr. Steven Katz is an award-winning clinician, medical educator, researcher and medical community leader. He is a graduate of the University of Manitoba’s medical school, where he completed a residency in core internal medicine, followed by a second residency in rheumatology at the University of Alberta. He also holds a post-graduate certificate in medical education from the Centre of Medical Education at the University of Dundee, Scotland.

Leadership and Collaborations

Dr. Katz is the Director of the Division of Rheumatology and Section Head for Rheumatology for Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone. He was the director, core internal medicine program, and associate chair, postgraduate medical education for the Department of Medicine until 2022. He is the patient triage coordinator for the Division of Rheumatology.  He is on numerous committees established to guide issues including health information management, clinician referral processes, medical education at all levels and arthritis care.

Research

In addition to Dr. Katz’s full-time clinical responsibilities at the University Hospital and the Kaye Edmonton Clinic, where he also provides clinical instruction and supervision, he is a prolific clinical innovator. Many of his novel initiatives are digital and intended for a patient audience. They include a YouTube site and websites about disease management. He developed a web-based Disease Activity Scoring System for rheumatologists (www.RheumDAS.com) that can be imported into patient charts. He is founder and co-director of two collaborative clinics. The first, the Collaborative Rheumatologist-Pharmacist Inflammatory Arthritis Follow Up Clinic, has resulted in a significant increase in patient access and satisfaction. The second, Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis, Improving Access to Care Clinic, offers multidisciplinary, data-driven care for patients with inflammatory arthritis and additional health conditions.

Dr. Katz’s research focuses on performance of and access to rheumatology care and is supported with funding from provincial and national health research organizations. He is the author and co-author of several articles in peer-reviewed publications as well as book chapters, reviews, editorials and dozens of abstracts.

Teaching

Dr. Katz’s active involvement in medical education comprises classroom instruction related to rheumatology as well as continuing medical education sessions for colleagues and health professionals throughout the Edmonton area. He is committed to public education about arthritis and has given many public talks in the Edmonton area and outlying communities on the subject.
