Personal Statement:

Cardiovascular problems are the primary cause of illness around the world and have a major impact on society, families and health care systems. As an interventional cardiologist, my primary interest is providing excellent care to my patients. I also believe the research we do at the Canadian VIGOUR Center helps develop and translate research innovations into care and give us the tools to provide evidence-based therapies to our patients which I believe makes Edmonton one of the top cardiac care centres in Canada. 

Interventional cardiologist Kevin Bainey is a graduate of the University of Alberta’s medical school. After completing his core internal medicine and clinical cardiology residencies in Edmonton (University of Alberta), Dr. Bainey pursued an interventional cardiology fellowship at Harvard University, Boston and subsequently became a clinical scholar in interventional cardiology at McMaster University, Hamilton.   He was the recipient of numerous awards during his undergraduate and residency medical education. Dr. Bainey also completed a Master of Science degree in health research methodology at McMaster. In 2011, he was recruited to the University of Alberta’s Division of Cardiology and works at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Bainey is the ECG Core Lab director at the Canadian Virtual Coordinating Centre for Global Collaborative Cardiovascular Research (VIGOUR) research centre, director of the Adult Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Cardiology Program at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, and the University of Alberta director for the AFC Interventional Cardiology Program. He co-directs the Alberta Acute Coronary Syndrome Group of the Cardiovascular and Stroke Strategic Clinical Network.

Dr. Bainey is active in national leadership roles including as co-director of the Canadian Association of Interventional Cardiology Fellows Device Course. He is also a member of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Anti-Platelet Guidelines Committee.

In 2018, under Dr. Bainey’s leadership, the Division of Cardiology achieved the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Area of Focused Competency (AFC) Accreditation in interventional cardiology training, as well as a commendation and designation as a model training site for Canada. Dr. Bainey is chair of Cardiology Update, a one-day course in management of cardiac problems in primary care.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Bainey is an attending physician and fulltime medical staff with Alberta Health Services at the University of Alberta Hospital. He also cares for patients at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute on the University of Alberta campus.

Research

Dr. Bainey is faculty at the VIGOUR Centre in the Katz Group for Pharmacy and Health Research. He leads and collaborates on numerous clinical trials for therapies for heart conditions. Among his research interests are reperfusion Injury in ST-elevation myocardial infarction, ethnic-based clinical outcomes focusing primarily on South Asians with coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries and heart attacks in women. His research, funded by provincial and national agencies including Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Alberta Health Services Quality Innovation Fund, has been published widely in peer-reviewed journals. These include American Journal of Cardiology, American Heart Journal, International Journal of Cardiology, Circulation, Cardiovascular Interventions, Journal of American College of Cardiology, New England Journal of Medicine, and Canadian Journal of Cardiology.

He is an abstract reviewer for the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress and the American College of Cardiology and a project grant reviewer for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He is on the editorial board of Atherosclerosis.

Teaching

Dr. Bainey provides trainees at all levels with research supervision, classroom instruction and clinical supervision. He is actively engaged in continuing medical education sessions. In 2011, Dr. Bainey received the Teacher of the Year Award from cardiology residents.
