About

Dr. Keith Wachowicz is currently appointed as Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

Research

My research interests generally lie in the acceleration of MR imaging for two purposes:

  1. Spectroscopic Imaging: This technique holds great potential for the cancer patient, essentially providing non-invasive biochemical information derived from tissue. It has been shown to benefit patients for diagnostic purposes, treatment planning, and monitoring response to treatment. Despite all these benefits, it is not used to its full potential in the clinic due to lengthy acquisition times and low resolution. I am working to leverage a number of recent techniques in anatomic imaging to make this technique more feasible to be used on a regular basis.
  2. Rapid Image Acquisition for Real-Time Applications: While many imaging techniques have been developed for rapid dynamic acquisition, many of these strategies are not conducive to on-the-fly reconstruction for real-time applications, for example, real-time radiotherapy guidance. I am exploring various under-sampling and reconstruction approaches for this purpose.

Courses

ONCOL 556 - Laboratory in Imaging

Practical experience with medical physics applied to diagnostic imaging. Operation of radiographic imaging systems and their evaluation with various test equipment and dosimetry systems. Introduction to the operation and evaluation of some advanced imaging modalities. Prerequisites: ONCOL 550 and 562. Corequisites: ONCOL 568 and 564.

ONCOL 562 - Theory of Medical Imaging

A system theory approach to the production, analysis, processing and reconstruction of medical images. An extensive use of Fourier techniques is used to describe the processes involved with conventional radiographic detectors, digital and computed radiography. Review and application of image processing techniques used in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. Consent of Department required.

ONCOL 690 - Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Methods and Applications

Advanced course on modern magnetic resonance techniques including in-depth description of hardware; advanced imaging sequences and image reconstruction methods; methodologies for in-vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Prerequisite: BME 564 and consent of Instructor.

ONCOL 691 - Advanced Magnetic Resonance Physics

Guided lecture course with preparation and delivery of teaching lectures on a current topic of Magnetic Resonance research in conjunction with ONCOL 692 and 693 presentations. Prerequisite: ONCOL 690 and consent of Instructor.
