About
In addition to being a Professor of Pediatrics & Adjunct Professor within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dr. Lisa Hornberger was the founder and initial Director of the University of Alberta’s Fetal & Neonatal Cardiology Program (2008-2020) and Section Head of Pediatric Echocardiography (2012-present) , Stollery Children’s Hospital. Under her leadership, the Fetal & Neonatal Cardiology Program was relocated to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Lois Hole Hospital for Women in 2008, the number of fetal echocardiograms performed annually has increased from 350-400 in 2008 to >2200 annually, a unique 1st trimester fetal echo program has evolved, a formal RAH Neonatal Cardiology Consult Service in the largest NICU in the Province has been developed, several community-based educational initiatives including symposia have occurred related to enhanced prenatal detection of fetal heart disease, and the Program has trained 2-3 subspecialty fellows in the field annually. Over the same time period, the Stollery Echo Lab has also witnessed a 60-70% increase in volume, has expanded its functional and 3-4D echo program, including provision of high level international workshop and trainees 2-4 subspecialty fellows in echo/noninvasive imaging annually.
Dr Hornberger directs the core cardiology residency training program Scholarly Oversight Committee and the Stollery Cardiac Program Research Rounds. In 2019, she directed the first Stollery Cardiac Program Research Retreat and in 2020 the international virtual Fontan Symposium which included colleagues from our partnering Western Canadian Children's Heart Network. She has been on the Program Advisory Committee for the University of Alberta’s Women’s & Children’s Health Research Institute since 2015, and is a member of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, and Cardiovascular Research Centre. Dr Hornberger is an active member of the North American Fetal Heart Society and as the Publications and Grant Committee Chair, she was instrumental in the publication of the Society's first peer-reviewed research paper (Krishnan et al Circulation 2021) and in securing grant funding for the Society's first prospective research initiative involving 27 Fetal Cardiology Programs in the US and Canada.
Dr Hornberger’s research is focused on the prenatal diagnosis, natural evolution, management, and outcome of structural, functional, and rhythm-related cardiovascular disorders detected in utero. More recently, her research has expanded to examine the impact of major CHD on fetal cardiovascular function and the perinatal transition, the impact of early adverse prenatal and neonatal exposures on longer-term cardiovascular health, the role of vascular dysfunction on adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with maternal heart disease, and the impact of socioeconomic status and remoteness of residence on clinical outcomes associated with major CHD. Her research incorporates clinical, basic, population and health services pillars facilitated through key collaborations with basic scientists, clinicians from many disciplines and clinical epidemiologists within the University of Alberta.

Research
Several Areas of Research Interest:
1. Improving the prenatal diagnosis, counselling for, management and outcomes of fetal heart disease
2. Impact of critical congenital heart disease on the perinatal transition (paper under revision for CJC and ongoing work in this area)
3. Impact of adverse early life exposures on early and long-term cardiovascular health (WCHRI Innovation Grant)
4. Contribution of vascular disease on adverse pregnancy outcomes in maternal heart disease (HSFC funded)
5.Exploring the impact of socioeconomic status and remoteness of residence on clinical outcomes before and afterbirth associated with congenital heart disease. (recent publication Krishnan et al Circ 2021)
6. Fetal cardiovascular function in health and disease
7. FAST Randomized Clinical Trial for Fetal Supraventricular Tachycardia (CIHR funded)
8. STOP-BLOQ: site PI for a multi-centered NIH-funded prospective clinical trial to prevent maternal autoimmune-mediated fetal heart disease
9. Several ongoing Fetal Heart Society retrospective and prospective investigations including a grant funded transposition.
Teaching
Directs the Scholarly Oversight Committee of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology which oversees formal research training of core cardiology residents
Oversees the clinical and research training of subspecialty fellows in echocardiography and fetal and neonatal cardiology as well as core pediatric cardiology trainees in echocardiography as well as general cardiology.
Course development for several symposia and workshops over the past 20-30 years. Most recently this has included: 1)WeCan Screen the Fetal Heart, a Western Canadian workshop to train OB ultrasound personnel to screen the fetal heart (2 courses in the past 3 years). 2) Beyond Pretty Pictures, a pediatric 3/4D echo international workshop (3 such courses over the past 5 years); 3) Fontan Patient of the 21st Century-Virtual Stollery Cardiac Program international 2 day symposium; 4) Faculty Mobility Program GOC funded educational endeavor in Sao Paulo Brazil collaborating with colleagues from Instituto Dante Pazzenese to hold 2-2 day fetal cardiology symposia.5) World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and CV Surgery Stollery Cardiac Program Symposium on the Heterotaxy patient (Barcelona, Spain).
Invited presentations for clinicians and researchers (KT/KD work) related to my expertise in fetal and neonatal cardiology. I am invited to 4-6 national and international forums, congresses, workshops annually, including as keynote speaker. In the past 10 years this has taken me to Japan, Australia, Europe, Sweden, Finland, Brazil, Argentina and India.
