About

Marghalara Rashid is currently appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

Research

My interest in health professions education stems from my previous experience in medical education, curriculum design, and program evaluation for interprofessional-based education. My research program engages a multi-method approach (e.g., knowledge synthesis, qualitative inquiry including ethnography, constructive grounded theory, and narrative Inquiry etc) to establish evidence-based solutions to improve equity in health professions scholarship. I am particularly interested in examining biases, barriers, and obstacles that hinder equity in health professions education.  Further, my focus is on cultural competency inclusion specifically exploring the experiences of health professionals and trainees from marginalized groups such as indigenous communities and visible minorities to promote Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenization (EDII).  We also focus on developing educational interventions that will assist educators and learners in gaining the cultural competencies required to provide appropriate care to patients from diverse groups. In particular, a philosophical approach to critical theory, intersectionality and decolonizing framework has played a significant role in informing study design, research questions, and the ensuing trajectory of our research projects.

Additionally, my program provides a centralized home for health professions education within the Department of Pediatrics where all faculty members (i.e., junior, and clinical) and trainees (students, residents, MSc, Ph.D., and postdoctoral fellows) can come together for learning, mentorship, and collaboration. In my program, we encourage collaboration with clinical faculty who are interested in HPE research in the Department of Pediatrics. There are 16 divisions in the Department of Pediatrics. The clinical faculty in these divisions greatly benefit from this initiative. Currently, I am leading interrelated activities to establish this program of research, for which we have applied to Tri-Council (or other relevant) funding agencies.
