Dr Courtney obtained his MD from the University of Ottawa in 1995, graduating cum laude. He completed his residency training in internal medicine and nephrology (FRCPC) at the University of Alberta.
His clinical practice includes general nephrology, hemodialysis and home dialysis therapies. In 2001, he was the physician lead for the medical team that initiated the Northern Alberta Renal Program's home hemodialysis program.
He is currently the residency training program director for adult nephrology and co-chair of the Canadian Society of Nephrology Education Committee. In 2017, he was awarded the Canadian Society of Nephrology Clinical Teaching Award and a Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his contributions to medical education for the nephrology community in Canada.
He is the medical director of general nephrology clinics at the University of Alberta. Other administrative interests include healthcare quality improvement and patient safety and he is the physician co-chair of the Northern Alberta Program Quality Improvement Committee. He is currently completing a Masters of Patient Safety at Imperial College London.
