About

Personal Statement:

As a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta, I specialize in general dermatology as well as occupational and hand eczema, vulvar dermatology and psychodermatology, in collaborative or multidisciplinary clinics with the Departments of Preventive Medicine, Gynecology and Psychiatry. I serve as the deputy Edmonton Zone chief for Dermatology, undergraduate medical director for Dermatology, Dermatology lead for the Edmonton Zone Council for Quality Improvement and Dermatology lead for Connect Care for the province of Alberta.

Marlene Dytoc obtained an MD and PhD in Microbiology from the University of Toronto. She completed residency training in Dermatology at the University of Alberta andspecialty training in vulvar dermatology in the US and Canada. Dr. Dytoc has held a clinical appointment in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Dermatology since 2002.

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Dytoc is director for undergraduate medical education and medical director of specialty clinics for occupational and hand eczema, psychodermatology and vulvar dermatology. She is provincial physician lead for Connect Care’s Dermatology Working Group. Now the dermatology Edmonton Zone deputy chief, her leadership as interim zone chief was recognized by the Department of Medicine in 2016. She is the Dermatology Division’s lead for the Strategic Clinical Improvement Committee and now Dermatology lead for the Edmonton Quality Council. In 2014, Dr. Dytoc established the Vulvar Dermatology Clinic at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic and co-established the Multidisciplinary Vulvar Diseases Clinic at the Lois Hole Women’s Hospital in collaboration with Dr. Nan Schuurmans. She also started the Occupational Eczema Clinic, in collaboration with the Division of Preventive Medicine’s Dr. Sebastian Straube. In 2020, she established the Multidisciplinary Skin Health Clinic (Psychodermatology) at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic, in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry’s Dr. Adam Abba-Aji and Dr. Xin-Min Li. She has served in executive positions with the Alberta Society of Dermatology and the Chinese Canadian Medical Society of Edmonton.Quality Improvement (QI) projects (all with University of Alberta HREB Ethics approval; except the new Pfizer grant application submitted Sept, 2020): 1) Allergen Avoidance in Glove-induced Allergic Contact Dermatitis, awarded research funding by the Chief Medical Officer of Quality Healthcare Improvement, AHS (manuscript submitted to peer-reviewed journal JCMS); (Dr. Navjeet Gill UBC Internal Medicine resident, Rylee Oosterhuis U of A medical student, Dr. Anneliese Smylie)2) Promoting Sun Safety Awareness in Elementary Schools, an outreach project to improve sun safety practices in schools (first PDSA cycle of sun safety presentation and survey done, manuscript submitted to JCMS; interventions being proposed to Edmonton Public School Board for second PDSA cycle); (Dr. Navjeet Gill UBC Internal Medicine resident, Miriam Li U of A medical student)3) Resource Stewardship Among Dermatologists Prescribing Biologics for Psoriasis, developed an educational patient tool on the characteristics of biologics for psoriasis (manuscript in preparation) (Dr. Matthew Hum, Marissa Nahirney medical student, University of Calgary) 4) Psychodermatology projects on frequency of cases in Alberta, survey of Canadian dermatologists and systematic reviews on epidemiology and management of psychocutaneous diseases with a PhD student (2 manuscripts submitted; one accepted to JCMS, another under review) (Dr. Tarek Turk, PhD candidate, University of Alberta)5) Referral Patterns and Vulvar Conditions in the Kaye Vulvar Dermatology clinic (retrospective study ongoing) (Dr. Laura Soong, U of A Dermatology resident)6) Understanding Approaches to Empathy and Efficiency in Dermatologic Patient Care, video and powerpoint presentation & survey (October 7, 2020 virtual event; analyses of results planned to identify interventions) (Kendra Martel, U of Calgary medical student)7) Development of web-based (E-learning) case-based Dermatology modules with a multidisciplinary aspect for medical students and residents at ualbertadermatology.ca. We will collect feedback by way of surveys and focus groups on how to improve this initiative (Dr. Harry Liu, UBC Dermatology resident)8) Submitted a QI grant application to Pfizer, Dermatology, Gastroenterology and Rheumatology collaboration, Sept. 2020 - Developing a Telemedicine Service in Three Different Specialty Clinics to Support Patients with Inflammatory Conditions. Clinical Interests

Dr. Dytoc cares for patients at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic and the Lois Hole Women’s Hospital at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. In addition to General Dermatology clinics, she has the following specialty clinics:

Vulvar Dermatology - 2 clinics / week at KEC, once a month at Lois Hole Womens Hospital (2nd Thurs am on each month) with a gynecologist (Dr. Nan Schuurmanns, previously Dr. Andrea Neilsen as coverage for Dr. Schuurmanns)

Research

Dr. Dytoc’s research includes quality improvement projects such as the development of a treatment algorithm for contact dermatitis to gloves, a clinical glove trial for glove-induced hand eczema, a patient education tool for the use of biologics in psoriasis, systematic reviews of psychodermatology in Canada, models of psychodermatology and vulvar dermatology clinics, creation of e-;earning case-based multidisciplinary dermatology modules for medical students, and approaches to increasing empathy in clinical practice and sun safety for school children in Edmonton. Her collaborations include evaluation of the use of a schizophrenia drug to ameliorate skin damage. She is first author and co-author ofpapers in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Cutaneous Medicine, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology and Medscape (Emedicine). She has presented at national and international conferences and meetings.

Teaching

In addition to heading Undergraduate Medical Education for Dermatology, Dr. Dytoc teaches medical students and residents in dermatology, family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, pathology and plastic surgery. She is an invited speaker for continuing medical education of family physicians and specialists.
