About
Dr. Rashid Mirzavand is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta. He holds the Engineering Research Chair in Intelligent Wireless Communication and Sensing, directs the Intelligent Wireless Technologies (IWT) Group, and CARDD-Tech sensor research co-leader.
His research develops radio-frequency (RF), microwave, and mm-wave antennas, circuits, and sensors for wireless communication and sensing. His group works on battery-free radio-frequency identification (RFID) sensors, reconfigurable surfaces, near-field measurement, and electromagnetic modelling. Applications include health monitoring, intelligent infrastructure, positioning, and environmental sensing.
Dr. Mirzavand is an IEEE Senior Member and a Professional Engineer in Alberta. He has co-founded technology companies focused on wireless sensing and related measurement systems.
Research
The IWT Group designs and measures wireless hardware, then integrates it into sensing and communication systems. Current research includes:
- Antennas and electromagnetic systems: conformal and multiband antennas, reconfigurable surfaces, near-field measurements, and electromagnetic compatibility.
- Battery-free sensing: RFID sensors, energy harvesting, and low-power wireless platforms for environmental and infrastructure monitoring.
- Integrated communication and sensing: RF systems that combine data transmission, sensing, and positioning, supported by modelling and machine learning.
- Biomedical sensing: wearable and implantable RF devices, physiological monitoring, and microwave-enabled therapeutic concepts.
