About
Research scientist Dr. Michael Stickland completed his PhD at the University of Alberta and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. He was recruited to the Department of Medicine’s Division of Pulmonary Medicine in 2006. Dr. Stickland’s research strengths and clinical focus have resulted in many awards and publications, and importantly, new protocols for testing, assessing and rehabilitating patients with lung conditions. His contributions to the field include that of a reviewer for scientific articles submitted to leading pulmonary health journals and grants to funding agencies. He was named one of Edmonton’s “Top 40 Under 40” by Avenue magazine in 2013.
Leadership and Collaborations:
Dr. Stickland is active on clinical and scientific committees of the university, major pulmonary non-profit associations and the health system. He is the director of G.F. MacDonald Centre for Lung Health, the scientific director of the Respiratory Health Strategic Clinical Network of Alberta Health Services, a member of the board directors for the Lung Association of Alberta and North West Territories, and a member of the Canadian Thoracic Society COPD Clinical Assembly which develops national clinical practice guidelines and research priorities for patients with COPD.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Stickland is leading the expansion of the Breathe Easy pulmonary rehabilitation program through the G.F. MacDonald Centre for Lung Health in Edmonton. Breathe Easy is now offered at over 20 sites throughout the province, with the goal to further increase capacity in the coming years. He is working with other clinicians and researchers across Canada to develop a standardized, pulmonary rehabilitation program, using evidence about fundamental behaviour change and exercise adherence, for clinicians to use to start up their own rehabilitation programs. He is also developing and evaluating, with colleagues at the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services, an evidence-based acute care discharge bundle to facilitate the transition to the community for patients with COPD.
Research
Dr. Stickland’s research interests include: 1) examining the cardiovascular consequences of chronic lung disease, 2) understanding exercise intolerance in pulmonary and cardiac disease, 3) autonomic control of cardiovascular function in health and disease, 4) pulmonary rehabilitation, 5) health outcomes in COPD.
Dr. Stickland has authored or co-authored more than 150 articles, abstracts and reviews published by peer-reviewed journals.
Teaching
Dr. Stickland supervises individual undergraduate and graduate trainees. He teaches pulmonary physiology as part of the medical education curriculum, and is part of the Adult Respirology Training Program.

Basic and clinical lectures on: Lung Structure; Pulmonary Blood Flow; Airflow; Gaseous Diffusion; Ventilation/Perfusion Matching; Control of Ventilation; Oxygen Transport; Lung Defense; Mucociliary Transport; ARDS; Asthma; Exercise; Lung Growth; Surfactant; Lung Metabolism; Pulmonary Function Testing. Prerequisites: General courses in Physiology, Physics and Biochemistry or consent of Department.
