Bio

Maryam Mirzaei is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta, supervised by Prof. Mahdi Tavakoli in the Telerobotic and Biorobotic Systems Group. Her research focuses on the application of natural language processing, particularly large language models, for health applications and human-robot collaboration, with an emphasis on medical and surgical applications. She is fascinated by explainable AI and its use in enhancing recommender systems to deliver personalized user experiences. Her Ph.D. thesis, which centered on personalized, explainable, aspect-based recommendations, utilized advanced language model approaches to accurately predict user opinions on various product aspects. Maryam is a recipient of multiple national and provincial awards in both Canada and Iran.

She is also the Associate Chair of Technology in the Department of Business, Technology, and Environment at NorQuest College. Maryam leads the Machine Learning Analyst Diploma program, the first of its kind as an undergraduate offering, and a major part of the government-sponsored AI Pathways project. Additionally, she is the director of the Digital Solutions Lab at NorQuest College, where she initiates innovative applied research projects, guides her team, and supports instructors and students in achieving industry partners' objectives and fostering valuable learning experiences.
