Carlos Moctezuma-Velazquez, MD, MSc completed medical school at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City. He trained in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán. He then pursued advanced training in Hepatology at the University of Alberta under the mentorship of Dr. Aldo Montano-Loza, followed by a Hepatocellular Carcinoma Research Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, working under the supervision of Dr. Josep Llovet, Dr. Myron Schwartz, and Dr. Charissa Chang.

He also holds a Master’s in Medical Sciences from UNAM.

In November 2022, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, at the University of Alberta. His clinical practice focuses on advanced liver disease, liver transplantation, and liver cancer.

Research interests include health services and clinical outcomes in hepatocellular carcinoma, with a focus on screening, early detection, frailty assessment, and patient related outcomes. He is committed to medical education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and improving equitable access to liver-related care.

Currently accepting undergraduate students for research project supervision.

Medical Student Opportunity: Quality Improvement Project in Hepatology We are looking for a medical student with an interest in QIQ and/or research to participate in an ongoing QI project at the Zeidler Ledcor Centre. The project aims to implement nurse-led assessments of the Liver Frailty Index (LFI) in patients with cirrhosis and the ECOG performance status in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) attending the hepatology clinic. Candidate needs already to have access to Connect Care. The program was implemented approximately three months ago and will continue until December 2027. Responsibilities: conduct a limited chart review of a randomly selected sample of patients to compare the proportion of patients who underwent LFI and/or ECOG before and after implementation, and then contribute with manuscript preparation. Part-time, 25/hour, Jan to Apr, 2026.
