About
Rheumatological diseases span many disorders and are among the most prevalent in society, affecting people of all ages. While my practice includes all types of rheumatic disease, one area that I am particularly interested in is lupus, because it affects the whole person—physical, cognitive, emotional and social—and is so variable in how it affects people. My research aims to discover ways to diagnose lupus early in its development and to ensure all lupus patients receive consistent high-quality care so that the disease is optimally managed. In parallel, I continue to evaluate patients with inflammatory arthritis (including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and spondyloarthritis), both for optimizing the best treatments and managing associated co-morbidities including cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. The ONTRAAC program is a state-of-the-art clinical research program which aims to provide the best care of these patients while studying factors which impact how they do. My past close collaborations with dermatology have led to the ongoing treatment of patients with dermatomyositis, which has led to new collaborations with rheumatologists and neurologists across the country to study how to best personalize treatment for these complex patients with varying disease presentations. I have recently collaborated with VIGOUR (Drs. Padma Kaul and Anamaria Savu) to study the impact of rheumatic diseases on the pregnancy outcomes of women in Alberta.
Dr. Stephanie Keeling completed her master’s degree in experimental medicine studying inflammatory back pain in spondyloarthritis.
Leadership and Collaborations:
Dr. Keeling established the Lupus Clinical of Northern Alberta (LUNA) with conjoint clinics in Dermatology. She has also collaborated with Cardiology at the Mazankowski Heart Institute and conducted a Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Clinic for Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases which has now evolved into the new ON-Traac (On Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis, Access to Care) program with co-director Steven Katz. This treat-to-target clinic for inflammatory arthritis includes co-morbidity management for osteoporosis and cardiovascular risk utilizing a shared care model with allied health professionals.
Dr. Keeling is a member of the Canadian Network of Improved Outcomes in SLE (CaNIOS), a Canada-wide group of rheumatologists collaborating to study Canadian SLE patients and the Lupus Clinical Investigation Network (LUCIN), a North American network of rheumatologists who are working to improve the lives of patients with lupus.
She is the principal investigator of GRADE-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of lupus in Canada. She is a board member of the Canadian Rheumatology Association and the Canadian Network for Improved Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and is a medical advisory and board member of the Alberta Arthritis Society.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Keeling cares for patients as part of the Alberta Rheumatology unit at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic. In addition to the LUNA and ONTRAAC clinics, her rheumatology practice includes a large population of patients with dermatomyositis and spondyloarthritis and newer medications for these complex diseases.
Research
Dr. Keeling is a clinical researcher who is the local principal investigator for several clinical trials for lupus. The Arthritis Society of Canada named the evidence-based, clinical practice guidelines for lupus care across Canada, developed by Canadian SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) working group led by Dr. Keeling, as one of the top ten research advances in 2018. She has published her research findings in such journals as The Journal of Rheumatology. She has also written articles about lupus for the public in on-line publications such as Personal Health News.
Teaching
Dr. Keeling teaches and supervises medical students, residents and fellows. She is part of a team that is developing a mobile app called the Dermatology Rheumatology Educational Tool for Autoimmune Manifestations (DREAM) Tool, which was a finalist in the Excellence in Education category at the 2018 SKINPACT awards.
