About

Dr Zaugg obtained his medical degree in 1989 at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich (Zurich, Switzerland) and completed his residency training first in Internal Medicine and subsequently in Anesthesiology at the University Hospital Zurich. In 1997, Dr Zaugg was clinical fellow in Anesthesiology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center (New York, USA). Afterwards, he completed a basic science fellowship in Cell Biology and Cardiovascular Physiology, at the State University of New York (New York, USA). In 1999, Dr Zaugg returned to Zurich, Switzerland where he conducted seminal research in his own laboratory at the University of Zurich, while working as senior clinician at the University Hospital Zurich. In 2008, he became Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Ottawa (Canada) and was appointed Full Professor of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Alberta, Edmonton (Canada). In 2011, he completed his Master of Business Administration (eMBA) at the Alberta School of Business in Edmonton (Financial Times Ranking: 48) where he specialized in health care management and hospital finance.

As an internationally recognized clinician scientist, Dr Zaugg leads his successful research group which specialized in proteomics, transcriptomics, genetics, and more recently in metabolomics. His projects also investigate mechanisms of organ protection including stem cell research. Dr Zaugg’s research has been consistently funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and he is currently supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation (CARF). He was the recipient of the 2005 Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award from the Anesthesia Research Society. In 2011, Dr Zaugg was honored with the Canadian Research Award in Pain and Regional Anesthesia.

Beside his research, Dr Zaugg is strongly engaged in teaching and education with a special interest in simulations in Anesthesiology. He is the PAC director and involved in Healthcare Management. Dr Zaugg has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals and he regularly delivers invited lectures at international meetings such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting, the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Meeting, the Euroanesthesia Meeting, and the International Anesthesia Research Society Annual Meeting.

Courses

PMCOL 425 - Problem Solving in Pharmacology and Therapeutics

Students will be presented with problem cases involving patients with conditions, possibly needing drug therapy. They will identify the issues needing resolution, work collectively to find information to resolve them, and present these and their application to each patient to the group. The group will work to resolve outstanding issues after the presentations. Intended for senior undergraduate students. Prerequisites: PMCOL 343 and 344 and consent of Instructor.
