About

Dr. Allen Nsangi is a health systems researcher, implementation scientist, and behavioural scientist with extensive experience in health literacy, evidence-informed decision-making, health education, and public health research. She currently serves as a Research Associate in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, where she collaborates on grant writing, evidence synthesis, and rapid reviews in support of population and health systems research.

Dr. Nsangi holds a PhD in Medicine and Health Sciences from the University of Oslo, a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management from the University of Birmingham, and undergraduate degrees in Health Studies and Social Sciences from Birmingham City University and Makerere University, respectively.

Over the past decade, Dr. Nsangi has coordinated multidisciplinary and multinational research programs across East Africa, working closely with educators, policymakers, curriculum developers, healthcare professionals, and community stakeholders. Her contributions include the development of innovative educational resources, stakeholder-engaged implementation strategies, qualitative and quantitative evaluations, and the translation of research evidence into policy and practice. Her work has contributed to curriculum development initiatives in Uganda and has informed health literacy and educational interventions across several African countries.

Her work has reached tens of thousands of learners and educators, contributed to global conversations on health literacy and critical thinking, and continues to inform the design and implementation of public health interventions in both low- and high-income settings.

Research

Dr. Nsangi has collaborated extensively with international institutions, including Makerere University, the University of Oslo, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, and the Cochrane Collaboration. Her research interests span implementation science, health systems strengthening, evidence-informed healthcare, chronic disease prevention, Indigenous health, knowledge translation, health communication, and community-engaged research. Through her scholarship, she seeks to advance equitable, culturally responsive, and evidence-based approaches to improving health outcomes and reducing health disparities in diverse populations.

Her research is extensively focused on developing, evaluating, and implementing interventions that strengthen critical thinking and health literacy skills among children, adolescents, and communities. She played a leading role in the internationally recognized Informed Health Choices (IHC) initiative, a pioneering program designed to help primary and secondary school students critically assess health claims and make informed health decisions. As part of this work, she co-led a landmark cluster-randomized trial published in The Lancet, which demonstrated significant improvements in students' ability to distinguish between reliable and unreliable health information.
