About

Personal Statement:

My primary interests are innovation, quality improvement and increased uptake of home dialysis, especially peritoneal dialysis. I am also an active user of social media to promote nephrology education.

Dr. Nikhil Shah graduated from medical school from the University of Pune in India where he also completed general internal medicine and nephrology residencies. He qualified as a Diplomate of National Board in India. He came to the University of Alberta as an American Society of Transplantation fellow in kidney transplantation and stayed to complete clinical nephrology and home dialysis clinical research fellowships. He was appointed clinical lecturer in the Division of Nephrology in 2017 and promoted to clinical assistant professor in 2019.

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Shah is the co-director of the Peritoneal Dialysis Unit for Alberta Kidney Care – North Division. He is a member of Connect Care’s Renal Area Council and Renal Working Groups for Med IT and Data Transition, tasked with overseeing the creation of a comprehensive provincial EMR for nephrology. He co-chairs a provincial working group for promoting home dialysis for both current and new dialysis patients and is a member of the Alberta Kidney Care – North’s Home Dialysis First Initiative. He is an executive member of NephJC.com, an online medical journal club that uses Twitter for discussing important nephrology literature. He is also faculty for the Nephrology Social Media Collective, an innovative online social media training course for nephrology professionals eager to harness the potential of social media. He is a member of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis’ Media and Communications Committee and is the upcoming social media editor for the journal Peritoneal Dialysis International.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Shah is fulltime clinical staff and an attending nephrologist at the University of Alberta Hospital. He also cares for patients at a rural nephrology clinic in Whitecourt, Alberta.

Research

Among the several quality improvement projects Dr. Shah leads is a transitional care unit that provides focused team support and promotes home dialysis for end-stage kidney failure patients, who are new to dialysis, to improve their experience. He is working with other Canadian centers to study the outcomes of embedded peritoneal dialysis catheters. He is also part of North American Registry for Peritoneal Dialysis Catheters. He has published papers and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals including Hemodialysis International and American Journal of Kidney Disease as well as in online-only publications.

Teaching

Dr. Shah delivers core lectures in nephrology and is active in training and leading social media use among nephrology trainees and physicians. He has completed several projects employing social media use in medical education, communication and promotion of clinical practices.
