About

Dr. Alvaro Osornio-Vargas's research interest is in air pollution and related health effects from the perspective of exposure to chemical mixtures. Specifically, he has focused on the effects of particulate matter at the experimental level. Currently, he is working on a project mapping the distribution of children's diseases (e.g., cancer, preterm births, congenital heart anomalies) and environmental variables in Alberta. He was trained and worked in Mexico City until August 2009, when he joined the Department of Paediatrics, University of Alberta, to develop the research segment of a Children's Environmental Health initiative. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the School of Public Health, University of Michigan, Rutgers School of Public Health and the School of Public Health, University of Alberta.

Teaching

Upon my arrival at the University of Alberta, we developed and, now, teach the graduate course in Pediatrics, Children’s Health and the Environment. It compiles years of experience working with students from different backgrounds, non-governmental organizations, and professionals from various disciplines. These and my research experiences confirm my conviction that interdisciplinary collaborative work is essential to move forward the subject of environmental health.
