Personal Statement
In medicine, we are all students because medicine is a life-long opportunity for learning. We learn from each other, from other health professionals and from our patients constantly. If you are passionate about learning and learning from each other, that is catching. That’s why I love working with junior learners. I catch their eagerness and their passion.
Dr. Hamilton is a General Internist practicing at the University of Alberta. He obtained his BSc Degree in Physical Anthropology and Comparative Physiology in 1976 at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. He went on to obtain his MBBCh (MD) at the same University and completed his rotating internship at Addington Hospital, Durban, South Africa. In 1980 he moved with his wife Jane to newly independent Zimbabwe where he worked in emergency medicine and internal medicine in Bulawayo and Harare.
He came to the University of Alberta in 1985 where he did postgraduate training in internal medicine and nephrology. He was appointed to the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta in 1990 and is currently professor and co-director of the Hypertension Clinic in the Department of Medicine.
Leadership and Collaborations
Dr. Hamilton is the director of the General Internal Medicine Division. He was the postgraduate training program director in the Department of Medicine for ten years, the assistant postgraduate dean, director of the integrated clinical clerkship and assistant dean in the MD program.

On a personal note, he is married with three children and a grandchild. He has an interest in the history of medicine, the history of art and the American civil war. In his spare time, he does acrylic painting and pencil drawing.
