Personal Statement:

Despite extraordinary advances in the diagnosis and care of heart disease this ailment continues to affect a very large portion of the North American population and its related costs keep climbing. Reducing morbidity and mortality from heart disease will require a strong and integrated approach involving both research and clinical efforts aimed at prevention of disease rather than delayed care of its advanced complications. Research advances will require a better understanding of the interaction of genetic and environmental factors involved in the development of several cardiac ailments. Finally, rehabilitation may constitute the single most effective treatment to be offered to patients with prior cardiovascular events. My clinical practice and research work have been upon atherosclerosis prevention and early detection as well as rehabilitation for patients with diabetes mellitus, the metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, HIV infection and chronic rheumatological conditions.

Cardiologist Dr. Paolo Raggi is an internationally recognized clinician and researcher who received his MD degree Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bologna, in Bologna, Italy. He served a residency in internal medicine in New York City and completed a cardiovascular fellowship at the Long Island College Hospital-State University of New York in Brooklyn, NY. He was a professor of medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans and at Emory University before being recruited to the Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiology in 2012.

Leadership and Collaborations:

Dr. Raggi is an adjunct professor of radiology as well as professor of population health and epidemiology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was on the expert committee of the 2018 Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes in Canada. He is the former director of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and chair of cardiac research at the University of Alberta.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Raggi is a cardiology consultant at the University of Alberta Hospital, whose focus is general and preventive cardiology and vascular medicine using nuclear imaging, echocardiography, magnetic resonance and computed tomography imaging.

Research

Dr. Raggi’s research investigates the mechanisms and prevention of heart disease and spans atherosclerosis imaging; vascular calcification; lipid metabolism; cardiovascular disease associated with chronic kidney disease, rheumatological disorders, HIV infection, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome; the impact of mental stress disorders on coronary artery disease; and epidemiology and clinical trials. He has led several international randomized clinical trials and sat on the steering committee on numerous others.

The results of his work have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Archives of Internal Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, European Heart Journal, Kidney International, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Radiology, Chest and several others. He has contributed over 350 publications to major peer-reviewed journals and 30 chapters for books on cardiovascular imaging and preventive cardiology.

Dr. Raggi serves as a consultant for 30 scientific medical publications. He is co-editor of and sits on the board of three peer-reviewed medical journals. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and the Society of Cardiac Computed Tomography of which he was a co-founder. 

Dr. Raggi has received numerous national and international awards for clinical teaching and clinical investigation. He was named a Knight of the Order of Stars by the president of Italy in 2017, an honour bestowed upon Italian citizens who have distinguished themselves for their service to the Country of origin and/or adoptive countries.
