About
Dr. Rhea Varughese is an assistant professor and respirologist with a focus on lung transplantation and pulmonary hypertension. She received her medical degree from the University of Calgary. She completed her internal medicine residency and respirology training at the University of Calgary. Dr. Varughese then completed her clinical lung transplant fellowship at the University of Alberta and University of Calgary followed by a research fellowship in transplantation at the University of Toronto. Dr. Varughese received her Master of Science in Epidemiology at the University of London/London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She was recruited to the University of Alberta in 2020.
Research
Dr. Varughese is interested in advanced lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and lung transplantation. She works to understand the effects of multi-morbidity and frailty in patients with lung disease and transplants. She also is working to improve pulmonary rehabilitation for pulmonary hypertension patients. Her contributions have been published in peer reviewed journals.
Teaching
Dr. Varughese supervises all levels of clinical and research trainees. She provides clinical instruction and classroom teaching to medical students, residents, and pulmonary fellows. She also contributes to continuing medical education in lung transplantation and pulmonary hypertension.
